Hypocrite Tom Barrett Flip Flops on State Business Incentives After Voting Against New Auto Jobs in Mid-Michigan

Barrett votes in favor of economic incentives after trying to block measures to support 5,000 manufacturing jobs in Michigan, calling them a “giveaway”

Last week in the Michigan Senate, Tom Barrett voted in favor of a $50 million state subsidy for a private company — after previously comparing economic incentives to “bribing corporations” and insisting that his opposition to incentives stems from voting his “conscience” and his “principles.”

Barrett’s principles previously led him to vote five separate times against economic incentives for a new GM manufacturing plant that will support 5,000 auto jobs in his own backyard.

Following Barrett’s flip-flop, Elissa Slotkin for Congress Campaign Manager Emma Grundhauser released the following statement:

“Tom Barrett claims to be principled – but one look at his voting record shows that he’s nothing but a hypocrite.

“When 5,000 jobs were on the line in his own backyard, Barrett voted against an economic incentive package based on his “conscience” and his “principles.” But last week, when the opportunity arose to award a similar subsidy to a private company in Osceola County, Barrett voted yes.

“What gives? Barrett’s constituents deserve to know what changed, and he should expect to be held accountable for his hypocrisy from now until November.”

The bill Barrett voted for includes a $50 million Michigan One-Time Grant from the General Fund to a private company for potash extraction operations.
